THRUPPENCE

This is the story of my grandfather.

We have always been close and spent a lot of time together. These images are the product of a year of work, many cups of tea, numerous jobs around the farm and conversations about the Ireland he knew as a boy.

Now well into his nineties, he still lives and works on the farm, spending most of his time tending to his flock of chickens. He heats his home with wood he cuts in the summer and cooks on the log burner like his uncle used to do back on the farm in Ireland.

While the weathers good he’s out repairing fences along the field boundaries or on the lane filling potholes and when it turns, he only braves the cold for his animals and the odd half pint at pub.

A lifetime ago his uncle led a very similar threadbare existence in Ireland, a time he looks back on fondly despite the many hardships and one that doesn’t look totally unfamiliar today.
